Remember how we were talking about alternate routes to places? Well, I wanted to give it a test run you know, before getting anyone else caught up in it
[ wtf... she's gonna put this at the back of her mind for future reference but man. rip elysium for being the first one. ]
My coworker from back home, Rodion, was put under house arrest for eating the chocolate that was meant to be passed around for Valentine's Day. Long story. [ rodya was right. her chocolates now. ] This is the first time I'd ever seen this punishment. Did they ever tell you when they'll reactivate it?
I don't know how long you've been here, but you're making it sound like I'm the first?
[ He would want to know…
But also, that seems like a strange thing to punish someone for. That's two times now she's mentioned and implied long stories and complicated situations; he's so morbidly curious at this point. ]
Twenty-four hours. Not really a big deal considering how little there is in there… but it's supposedly for making an entire squad come in to rescue me on their day off! Haha! I wonder if when it reactivates the balance will be zero? In the negatives? It sure isn't enough to cover that many salaries, or fuel…
This is my 5th month here, so... Yes, you are the definitely the first. At least one that I know of. For all I know, other people might've been punished this way and I just never caught wind of it.
[ but nope he's most likely the first one. congratulations, king 👏👏👏 ]
Wait, you had an entire squad after you? Just where were you before they came and picked you up?
[ she should be thankful she wasn't there but rn she's like 🧍♂️....... ]
[ He was also like 🧍♂️…… that sure did just happen to me! They don't talk about the helicopter ride itself. ]
Excessive, right? They could've contacted me at any point and I would've returned. Probably.
[ Not that he'd ever think they'd literally SWAT him… help ]
Interestingly enough, it was a bit past the twenty-four hour mark that they'd come to get me. So, I guess it goes to show how closely they're monitoring us? [ 👋 ] But I made it to a nice little city called Shizuoka. In the off-chance this information ends up relevant to you, there isn't much out there by way of people or kaiju, though I did run into the occasional stray.
Just like back home. Guess they mostly let us mind our own business until one of us strays too far. But to send an entire team for one person is a little too excessive, don't you think so? Did they ever mention anything to you aside from all the scolding they'd have given you?
[ surveillance state much..... ]
Guess there's nothing scenic about that route, then. [ sigh. ] Anyway, are you hungry? I could get some food delivered for you if you can't spend money right now.
That's!!! Exactly what I said!!!!!! If I could make the journey there, I could make the journey back, easy. And if they really wanted to monitor me I would've stayed with them on a call. All they gave me was that people straying too far would make them liabilities.
[ Was there a timer on this? Where does it start, exactly? It's hard to get over how they'd swooped in unannounced; these are the thoughts of a man whose done nothing for the past few hours but contemplate the surreality of it, like 'was there something they don't want me to see'?? ]
Well… I can't say that it wasn't nice to get out of the city. And there were some nice views that I bet others would've liked…! But
You'd do that? For me?
[ he's gonna start crying ishmael tread carefully (not really, but the equivalent on the annoying scale) ]
[ listen... they don't got proper law enforcement back in the City so they just send other people to kill you on the spot if you break said taboo. elysium had definitely gotten off better. ]
Please don't overthink it. I feel a little guilty for even suggesting the idea to you in the first place. It's kind of my fault, when you think about it.
I suppose it's because you're new here that they thought that you were trying to find some sort of escape from your current predicament in this world. If I were there they might be a little more lenient, but that's just wishful thinking from me. I doubt they'd show any preferential treatment just because I've been here longer.
And at least tell me you took pictures of the area before you were whisked away to make your trip worth it.
What's there to overthink? We've only talked once, and you don't know that I wouldn't have done it without your input.
(Because the secret is: I would've!)
[ So yes, she's firmly cemented herself as someone who's kind with that alone… like how Ishmael's standards for people acting normally are dirt low, so is Elysium's for people who are nice—not that what she's doing now isn't a fair measure for it, to give credit where it's due.
But there'll be a small collage of pictures coming her way shortly, mostly of fuji-san and of the clear skyscape and trees, away from the light pollution of Neo Tokyo. Notably, there'll be none of the ground proper or any of civilisation. Hopefully that speaks for itself. ]
I suppose that's all I can make by way of repayment for now. What do you normally like to eat?
No... Somehow I had a feeling that you'd go out on your own without telling me anyway. It's no different from a sailor who's always yearning for the sea.
[ in his case it's the thirst for adventure, with how eager he was to go out there despite being a newcomer in a strange new world. even ishmael had to map out neo tokyo during the first couple of weeks.
still, give her a moment to glean through the photos he just sent her. the shots he took of mt. fuji and various skies and foliage are admittedly nices, but she was lowkey hoping he took pictures of a lake or something... :( oh well. not like she can just ask him to go back out there. ]
Seafood? I'm not too picky. But why are you asking *me*? I should be the one asking you that.
[ When she puts it like that… her longing feels all the more tangible. In a way, he's pretty lucky, isn't he? Being region-locked isn't remotely the same to being land-locked. At least, he has alternatives to keep himself from feeling too claustrophobic… but the same couldn't be said for her, could it? ]
Because I'm not too picky either, and would rather defer to your expertise! I haven't been here for long enough to know what's good, you know?
[ the sea can be claustrophobic in its own way; there's little room to breathe when you're at the mercy of the Waves, after all. but she can't really blame him for not taking any photos of bodies of water, assuming that they're also fucked up by the wreckage left behind by the kaiju... ]
I could really go for some grilled eel right now... I passed by this one shop on the way home the other day, and I want to hit that up once I have the chance.
[ tmw the mods only mentioned forests and graves and i didn't want to assume the lakes were left relatively unscathed… sorry ish maybe they'll get to go somewhere with a nice lake soon :(
… Anyway, normally he'd be shameless about taking up someone offer for a free meal, but the circumstances are slightly different here: ]
Woah!!! Eel's pretty expensive, isn't it?
You sure that's a meal you want to take me to? I'm only asking once!
[ or so he exaggerates, but she can bet he'll return the favour once he gets his account sorted out. ]

Just out of curiosity, has there ever been repeat offenders?

Grilled squid it is! I'll meet you out by the entrance of the base whenever you're free.
